Wisconsin's newest marathon welcomes you to join us February 12-13, 2011 for the inaugural Sandbox Indoor Trail Marathon!

The indoor races are a unique concept for long distance running. Each runner will complete their distance by running a pre-determined number of laps around the course within the Sandbox Indoor Arena located just north of New Richmond, WI.  We have designed a 1/4 mile running surface in the arena which will require marathon participants to run about 110 laps, half-marathon 55 laps, etc.

The Sandbox Indoor Marathon is being inspired by the race direction and marketing experience of Russ Korpela who is the current executive director of the New Richmond Area Chamber of Commerce and has over 15 years of race directing experience. He is the co-founder and current race director of Ashland 's highly successful WhistleStop Marathon. The Sandbox Indoor Marathon is also inspired by the success of the Instep Icebreaker Indoor Marathon which just held its second running on January 23 rd & 24 th , 2010 at Milwaukee 's Pettit National Ice Center .

The races will be spread out over the weekend and will feature distances for runners of all ages and abilities including a full marathon, half-marathon, 4 person marathon relay, 5k, and 10k. The events will be chip timed and systems will be put in place to help you keep track of your lap count.

New Richmond is home to the Sandbox Arena which is a 100,000 square foot heated indoor motocross facility. It hosts motocross events and testing for professional racers as part of a winter long event schedule. The motocross performance area is approximately 300' x 200' and is surfaced with specialized dirt which can be shaped into hills and jumps. The dirt is also very compactable to create a very firm surface. The performance arena is supported by a large lobby/expo area, restrooms, concession area and a 20,000 square foot concrete staging area which can be used for musical performances.
